Reading Discussion

Excellent job this week guys! Don't worry, you will get more comfortable in front of a classroom, and you will create awesome lesson plans- let's just keep working on it:)

For this week, I would like you to discuss the following questions based on Penny Ur's section Listening for Comprehension with Short Responses in the comments here and then be prepared to talk about it next week after the quiz. Think about the language classes you have taken and try to remember if you have done anything like the examples she has given. Did they work? If so, think about why. If not, think about why...

1. What do you think are the most useful exercises of the week?
2. Which activity (ies) could you imagine actually using in the classroom? Why?
3. Which activity (ies) could you not imagine using in the classroom and why?

7 Minute Activity

1. Choose 1 listening task from the book you were given.
2. Review the general guidelines for how to complete a listening task (both Ur and Helgesen & Brown).
3. You will: 1. Introduce the pre-listening activity; 2. Introduce and run through the listening activity (this you will actually complete with us as the students, so make sure you like the listening piece that you chose!); 3. Explain any follow-up activities
4. Make sure you have enough photocopies of the activities and your lesson plan for each of us (me included!)
5. Practice a few times before Monday- this should be polished and professional!
6. Make sure you are prepared to tell us why you chose the lesson that you did, the purpose of the lesson, as well as anything else we should know.

Class Time Change: Respond Immediately!

Stacy has given me approval to change the start time of the course, so we have to make a decision:
4:30- 6:15
5:00-6:45
5:30-7:15

Week 2 Discussion

Why do you think it is important to recognize the difference between top-down and bottom-up types of activities? When is using top-down appropriate (to what purpose) and when is bottom-up appropriate? (in listening activities of course!)

Hi Everyone! I have decided to create a blog for the class, so that it is easier for us to have discussions about the readings and homework assignments throughout the week.
